In our society today, accountancy is one of the most in-demand jobs in the Philippines. It is a profession that helps the business to become successful through means of teaching and helping the business to become economical. But one of the different types of accounting professions has not been given much value in regards to the overall success of our economy and our country as a whole which is called social accounting.
You maybe wondering, what is social accounting? The term social accounting was first used in economics by J.R. Hicks in 1942 which is the process of communicating the social and environmental effects of an organization’s economic actions to a particular interest within society and to society at large. It is often referred to as an umbrella term which describes a broad field of research and practice. People who study under this profession are responsible for overseeing how a certain business or organization operates different economic activities affects the society, environment and the economy of the country as a whole.
Social Accounting is a profession that is not commonly practiced in the Philippines and I do believe that our country is in dire need of social accountants. Our country is experiencing a lot of social and environmental problems caused by different types of business operations in the country. For example, many people do not have permanent homes and forests are being destroyed in order to establish a 30 feet tall establishment like hotels and resorts. These businessmen may have a certified public accountant to calculate the incomes and expenses of the business in making the establishment but they don’t have social accountants to discuss to the panel board about the social and environmental effects of the making that certain establishment.
So what am I trying to prove here? Let us take out the mentality of choosing accountancy as a profession because it provides us the financial stability we want in the future. Instead, let us instill in our minds that we choose a certain profession that helps, not only our family, but also the society and the country as a whole. We are next in line in creating and discovering something new and innovative for our country. Let us be the generation that contributes to the change our forefathers want for our country, and most especially to ourselves. Follow and achieve a dream that would benefit you, your family, the society and your beloved country.
